(Sorry to revive this but...) Searching on the forums, I found this thread. To any who want to tint your tails, I've done it on my eclipse about 2 years ago and it hasn't faded a noticeable amount since.
What I did was:
0) REMOVE TAIL-LIGHTS. You want to do your painting in a well-ventilated area, but nowhere too windy (things like dust will blow onto your paint)
1) Use a saturated amount of lacquer thinner to remove anything from the lens (ie: wax) and etch the plastic to prepare it for sanding.
2) sand down the lens with fine to very-fine sand-paper.
3) apply 1st coat (VERY thin layer - should look almost stock after first coat) and let dry
4) apply additional coats evenly and a bit thicker than the first coat but not too think that it runs - allow dry periods between coats. repeat until desired darkness is achieved.
5) after COMPLETELY drying, sand down paint with VERY VERY FINE sand-paper. Wipe clean with a lint-free cloth - otherwise lint will stick and you would have to start all over.
6) apply clear-coat as you would the tint spray - in layers
7) enjoy
all these steps are necessary since you are using CANNED tint spray. Other higher-quality paints should be applied normally.
I'll do this to my accord soon. It takes a LOT of time but it is worth it. My favorite part about it is the fact that it looks like theres a black plastic covering over it. It has a natural, even shine to it that fools the most crucial critiques (judges for you show cars)
