we all waste money on interestes or hobbies. if not we'd all just be spending money on food and shelter. nerds waste money on video games, chicks waste money on coach purses and shoes. if i didn't mod my car id waste it on games or going out or something. But when i mod my car, i can turn around and sell those parts and make some money back, if i spent it on clothes or going out I cant get that money back. I spent $7,000 on my car, when I parted out I came out with $2,500. so thats a $4,000 loss which is not bad over like 3 years imo.

when it comes to modding cars on a budget, look for good deals, dont buy things new, unless you have to, make a savings acoount, put money to save on the side, and then blow the rest on car parts, thats what im gonna do on my next car!

as my dad says (remember he's 50+) different strokes for different folks. its whatever makes you happy, for some guys is cars for others its whatever. cars are my form of expression, my passion my love, my driving force. i love tons of other things but if it wasnt for my cars i'd feel a void in my life. thats the kind of thing we all need to find in our life. it doing what makes you happy. To quote Nietzsche "The question in each and every thing 'Do you want this once more and innumerable times more?' "
Simply put, if you had to do this life all over again for the rest of eternity would you regret what you've done?

Yeah the reason you probably think it is a waste is since you don't have the same passion anymore..because really any hobby is a waste of money..unless what your buying appreciates..

I have had tons of expensive hobbies...Golf, photography, car, and now guns

and i am somewhat with you on the car thing...but just for my accord..i have realized since it is over 7 years old and since i am going to sell it in a few years that spending money on it is pointless now..hence the reason i have stopped and moved onto other things.. :D

For some people it's a phaze, i know plenty of people who went really far on one car, just to buy a nicer car like a bimmer and keep it 100% stock. For other people, it's just what they do. I actually bought my accord so i'd have a car that i'd keep totally stock (that didn't work obvioiusly).

I think the main thing is be realistic. Mod your car around your personality, your perception of what the car can be, and most importantly, your income. The main people i see who are displeased are the ones who dropped way more money than what was realistic for them. The other people who seem to get really disappointed are the ones who follow a trend and when it dies, their car isn't so cool. I'm not saying you fall into either, that's just where people get down on modding cars.

Secondly, be realistic (yet again). Did you enjoy modding your car? Did you enjoy what you turned it into? I think people miss this fact when they go to sell their car because they see how much money they could have saved. For me, i have other hobbies i can drop cash on but i always budget a bit for my car because that's where i spend alot of my time.

For me, my old hobby was building model cars. It wasn't uncommon for me to drop $50-60 on a kit, then buy a detail kit for $15+. I probably have about 40 unbuilt kits collecting dust in my closet partially put together so I can't sell any of them. It makes me sad when I think of all the money I spent on supplies, etc. Hopefully now that the snow is going to fall in the next couple of weeks I'll work on some more, but that's what I said last winter too.
Like everyone else has said, it is a phase in your life, it may last 50 years, or it may last only 1. You can either think about all of the money you have wasted and get mad, or think of all the good things that have happened in your hobby. Think of all the memories, people you have met, and knowledge you have gained throughout the years.

dont get me wrong i really did enjoy modding my car over the years, getting to meet new people both local and online, going to car shows, getting compliments by people on the car, cars slowing down while im driving to look at it. Then all of a sudden one day something snapped and i realized that i just had no passion for my car anymore i didnt find interest or pride in my car anymore maybe i need a new one to spark the interest again?
