Has anyone heard about it? I saw it about a month ago online at the online Honda Dealerships. Supposedly, it is a full synthetic transmission fluid and is better as it warms up the transmission quicker and provides "better fuel economy". I might be picking some up for my next drain and fill if I can't find any Z1 at the dealership as they have claimed it would be a suitable replacement for Z1. It seems that they're completely stopping the production of Honda ATF-Z1 as well.

This is the first time I've heard of this. I did some snooping on google and found this on Azine:

A new ATF is now available for all Honda vehicles. Honda ATF DW-1 was developed with the intention of improving low temperature fuel economy. DW-1 is capable of maintaining a lower viscosity at lower temperatures resulting in less energy required to move the vehicle during the warm-up period. High/normal temperature viscosity remains the same as the current ATF-Z1.

APPLICATION:
Factory Fill - All 2011+ MY Honda vehicles will come with ATF-DW1.
Mixing - Automatic Transmissions currently filled with ATF-Z1 can be filled or topped off with ATF-DW1. Mixing the two fluids will not negatively affect performance.
Storage - Dealers using bulk storage systems can mix the new ATF-DW1 with the old ATF-Z1 if necessary. However it is recommended that the existing stock of ATF-Z1 be depleted before refilling with ATF-DW1 as mixing the two does deplete the performance advantages of the DW-1."

I'm definitely glad to hear that the new DW-1 synthetic ATF will maintain the same viscosity as the Z1 under normal operating temps yet still have a lower viscosity at the lower temps so that it shouldn't increase wear on the clutchpacks and should provide no less overall protection than the Z1. As a matter of fact Honda has already stated:

The key benefits for the Honda ATF DW-1 are:

Low Temperature, Lower Viscosity:

- Better lubrication

- Reduced friction at low temperature

- Improved fuel economy

High Temperature, Stable Viscosity:

- Maintains film thickness

- Improved protection against breakdown

- Full synthetic, high film strength

It seems promising as it may extend the life of our transmissions. I'm going to check with my mechanic about this since I need to change my transmission fluid within the coming months. If you do pick it up anytime soon, you should keep us updated.

Sounds nice on paper but I hesitate to switch. Im due for a change in about 250 miles though, so im glad this was posted. I wonder if my dealer would/could use Z1 if I asked for it.

Most dealers should still have Z1 I believe but I believe they won't be restocking on anymore Z1. Once it's all used up, I'm pretty sure they'll just keep using DW1. I still have some Z1 so I'll just use that on my next change and start DW1 afterwards. I think I might end up doing the 3 drain and fills at once to swap out all the Z1 for DW1.

WOW this is big news. I hope it stays around $6.38-$7.20. Man with this economy.. I wish i could buy some of the old atf-z1 by the gallon.

True, but hopefully with the newly formulated fluid, it would help prolong the life of the transmissions.

Perfect timing with this, due for a transmission service in about 800 miles. It says no negative effects with mixing the two, so I think I will drain/refill my transmission with this stuff at each oil change interval until the swap is complete. It can't be any worse than Z1 for our transmissions so we'll see.
