It could be that the locking lever is broken

It still locks/unlocks as it normally should, except when I pull on the thin metal rod, it doesn't open the latch. Would that mean it's the locking lever?
And I still need to figure out how to access those parts with my tools. This info is all useless without the know-how!

If it's anything like the civic, there are 3 screws in the door jam you just remove and it will fall off.

Right I can see that but what I don't understand is how I'm supposed to reach that with that metal "skeleton" in the way..

I'm going to bring this thread back to the top because I'm having the same problem, but it's with my driver's door. OP, did you ever get this fixed? Does anyone else have anything to add? Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
