Re: Going for a re-tune.... (Round #2) Updated 5/20/13

Well I have found out that the welder is a tig welder at the shop where I work, but it is not wire feed, it is stick welder.... Don't really want to do it myself with that type of welder, so I will have to try to set up a time for either a shop to do it or a friend of mine to do it who works at an auto performance shop.... trying to set that up now....

And of course they are putting in my sidewalk in front of my house, so that means I'll have to wait for at least 5 days to be able to drive it over the sidewalk and get it out of the garage.... ugh! Both good and bad news kinda....

But I'll keep you guys updated as I find out more!

Re: Going for a re-tune.... (Round #2) Updated 5/20/13

Haven't updated in a while.... Been busy with the Audi doing an oil changes and all new pads/rotors, also needed a keg for the kegorator, and gearing up for sprinkler system and deck for the house (which has been sucking up most of my money). Also, just waiting for my buddy to have some free time to help me fix the exhaust....

I'm starting to think just to pay to have someone fix it just so I can go for a tune already....

Re: Going for a re-tune.... (Round #2) Updated 5/20/13

Well drove it about 300 miles last Thursday and noticed that boost or v-tec was not working whatsoever.... Kinda strange. So this weekend, I looked into it, took the vtec solenoid out and cleaned it and noticed that on one of the connectors the wire wasn't in one side. It honestly looked like a wire was cut.... Kind of strange.

So I completely re-wired the solenoid and wamo, pulled 18psi strong and hard. So now that I've been driving it around for a while, I've noticed that the exhaust isn't as urgent as I thought....

So the plan is I have a permit in for my deck, and I'll have to see what that will cost, along with renting an auger and stuff for building the deck myself, and should have that figured out this week. If I got the extra money after that, I'm setting up a tune for next week. Finally.

Re: Going for a re-tune.... (Round #2) Updated 8/8/13

So after driving it for a long while, i'm starting to find things to tweak:

- Thermostat seems sticky as the coolant temp only goes down under load. When idling it raises a little over 3/4 of the way. Never reaches H or within 10% to H, but seems like the thermostat is slightly sticky so i'll have to replace it.

- Drove it today over 300 miles, and found out today that under 18psi of boost, the clutch is now slipping. I have now officially overhorsepowered the heaviest pressure plate and single disc clutch ACT has....

So before I can go for a tune, I need a hardcore clutch that keep up with the re-tune and future power. Any suggestions on 2, 4, 6, 8 puck or twin/triple discs out there that work with our transmissions?

I've also thought about tearing almost everything out of the car and selling it just to get it down to the dash, center console, and front door cards. Everything else will go....

Sucks cause I literally had a side deal within the next week with a tuner to tune it too along with fix the exhaust and battery tie down set up to get ready for the track event in Brainerd, MN 1st weekend in september. Now I don't think that will happen.

Clutch suggestions are more than welcome! more to come soon!

Also, I'm assuming since this is the one and only clutch I have had with the ACT 11lb flywheel, i'm assuming I can just re-surface it and it's still good (most likely depending on the condition when it is visible). That true?

Also assuming if I go ACT I can just upgrade the disc, new throwout bearing and alignment tool and be good?

Right now i'm rated at 386ft/lb with the organic street performance disc. If I get the race 4 puck ACT (Rated at 494ft/lb) I can get that, a new throw out bearing, and alignment tool for under $150. But thats assuming I can re-use pressure plate, and re-surface and re-use the flywheel....

THoughts?

Do you have a water temp gauge? Are you sure you don't have some air bubbles flowing around in the system?

Not good news for me! Is that under throttle or while shifting?

If your pressure plate and flywheel surfaces are good and don't have any glazing or hot spots, you could just swap out the disc. Personally, I would go to a sprung 6-puck, maybe a 4-puck if you really want a sharp engagement, but I don't think the 4-puck is rated any more than the 6.

You should contact ACT and ask what the spec is for the step (can't remember the correct name) is on the flywheel in case it needs to be resurfaced. That's crucial to ensure the clutch engages and disengages properly.

That's what I'd do.

EDIT:

Step height. ACT has some guidance on their FAQ, but I didn't see an exact spec on the product page.

Re: Going for a re-tune.... (Round #2) Updated 8/8/13

Thanks AF!

I'm almost positive there aren't any bubbles in the system, but still you never know. Don't have water temp gauge, just the stock one. And it's only during idle, but when the engine is under load while the heat is blowing full force too. It's quite strange actually. Otherwise under load or moving it stays where it should.... I would think that's either air bubbles or thermostat....

The clutch is slipping under full boost/throttle, and the rpms shoot up and the car stops accelerating. during shifting it works just fine. So I know it's the clutch disc going. When I tear it apart I'll check for hot spots and abnormal wear to see if the plate or flywheel can be resurfaced and within specs.

I was thinking about contacting ACT because their top disc is rated at 494wtq which is what I want for the time being. Just got to coordinate with them what is interchangable. I was thinking of going with the 6 puck if it is still rated at that level and sprung for the least harsh engagement. Thanks for confirming.

That's exactly what I was looking for. I'll get a hold of them to see what my options are and their spec ranges for steps and resurfacing to verify if they are still within spec after removed from the car...

Thanks again AF! rep points indeed! hopefully will be able to get this done before winter comes to get a tune....
