Unhooked the battery the other day for a couple hours to let it reset and relearn with the new coil. It was fine until I ran some errands and went a few places. At the third or fourth place I came out and went to start it and it starts and dies. It’s happened once or twice before and I could usually just throttle through it but this time I had to 2 foot it and keep throttle up with one foot and work the brake with my other. After I got going and driving for a minute, it cleared out but it threw codes again.

Random cylinder misfires on 2, 3, 4, 5, and that generic P1399. I had to remove the battery for an unrelated issue but I don’t think it was long enough to reset anything. Haven’t started it since. I was gonna try and remove the IM this weekend and try and clean it but the weather is gonna get cold and our other car is being worked on next week so I need it to at least get me to work and back. After our other car comes back I’ll see about messing with it.

I’m still wondering if running a tank of 91oct will work or maybe even shooting some carb cleaner into the TB.

THE SAGA CONTINUES!!

The other week I replaced cylinder 4 coil. Went for a drive last night and dropped another one. Checked it this morning and found cylinder 2 coil dead. Just went ahead and bought a set of 6 from Oreillys. I just replaced cyl2 but I’ll wait and see if the other ones drop. I’ll keep them in the car with me and they’re easy enough to change.

I’d like to see about removing my IM and cleaning out any carbon but I’m also thinking I’ll just run a tank of 91 through it and see what that does.

Not gonna do the 91 octane. I had been CEL free for the last several days. Even knocked out a few spirited, twisty drives on the way home and then today I got a CEL.

P0401 - EGR.

I keep getting at odd intervals but when I get one, the same thing is happening; I’m in D3 and I’m usually slowing or coming to a stop. Before when I was getting CELs for the misfires they’d happen randomly, even at speed. But the EGR code only seems to pop up when I’m in D3. I cleared it and I’ll try driving around the next few days without shifting into lower gears and I’ll see if it pops up.
That won’t fix the issue but perhaps it won’t exacerbate it as much? IDK.

Thinking about putting my Patrick’s on. If not this weekend then soon.

OH! Also wanted to share these here. Thoughts? Opinions?

Tackling this today. A third of the way there. The IM side of the TB gasket was paper and it tore when I pulled the IM off. New one isn’t in town so I gotta wait. Gonna try and clean the IM out as best I can. Might mess with the EGR itself while I’m at it.

Day 2….

LOL. IM/TB gasket should be in town in a couple hours. Took the IM to work and used our parts washer. Also used carb cleaner, a wire brush, and a gun cleaning brush. I’m satisfied with how clean it is. Also cleaned the port on the head with carb cleaner and the gun brush as best I could.

Before I put the IM in the washer, I went to remove the IAT sensor and it took almost no force. Thought that was weird. Well when I went to reinstall it, it just spun. The threads pulled off the sensor. Ordered a new one. It’ll be here in a couple days. Once I get the gasket, I’ll put everything back together and leave it until the new sensor shows up.

My only concern at this point is any of the carbon build up getting into the engine and torquing the top IM bolts. They’re only 16ft/lbs but I haven’t had the best luck with top side bolts lol.

Done. lol.

IM back on. New “spacer to IM” gasket. TB back on. New IAT sensor.

Reused old IM gasket and whatever that little trapezoid shaped thing is on the back of the IM. New IAT had an oring inside the plug. Had to remove it. Tightened it to “snug”.

IM bolts scared me. One of them felt like it was gonna snap but they all torqued to 16ft/lbs. Also removed and cleaned the EGR while I was at it. Nowhere near as much carbon buildup as I’ve seen others have. I also used a parts washer tho so who knows.

My issue/CEL was in D3 on decel and stopping. Drove around town a bit in D3 and so far so good.

I think next up might be putting the Patrick’s on. Supposed to be pretty shit weather this weekend so it may have to wait.

Well… we’re back on our bullshit. Didn’t drive it all last week just cuz and then yesterday I went to start it to take it to have the AC looked at and it was rough idling again.

Went ahead and changed the rest of the coils. Issue still present. I guess next up is the EGR and if that don’t fix it then I’ll have the shop look at it.

EGR ordered. Should be here Thursday. Hoping I can get that swapped Thursday even real quick. May also give it a more aggressive thrashing while I’m there.

Needs that Italian tune-up. hah

Hope that solves it for you.
Unfortunately, it did not. It cleared up a little but it’s still running rough. Either I didn’t get all the carbon, pushed it further inside, or…. Idk. Probably needs seafoam or like a BG treatment to clean it out. Im almost $400 into the issue and still haven’t resolved it.

I was originally going to have my AC fixed but this now takes precedence and it’s pretty much out of my hands. Gonna see about getting into a shop to have it looked at.
