How would I know if my sub can handle abuse?

By how well it is made. Usually you can search the sub/model to determine by pics and reviews if it is a well made sub.

So what sub is it?

And I know you don't want to believe me, but if your sub is rated at 300W then a 1000W amp is not too much because you just set the gains as I described. Even if you get a 500W amp you will still listen for any sound other than bass when setting the gains. But the converse is true, a 150W amp is not too small because you just set the gains correctly, but in this case you would set the gains mainly to prevent clipping.

^^^ That amp is a beast; expect more like 700W+ bridged. And that is a great price. Although if he is using a ported box he might want a SSF.

How much power it can handle kind of depends on the tuning frequency of the ported enclosure. But I'd guess the most it will take is 275-300W.

You do want an amp with an lows filter. They have different names.- SubSonic Filter (SSF). InfraSonic Filter. Bass Blocker. -It will help prevent the sub from trying to play below the tuned frequency.

Many people (including myself) have had bad experiences with "out of stock" items on onlinecarstereo. I would cancel the order. Matching amp to sub is WAY overrated and IMO, there are better amps for the money.

It does have an subsonicfilter. Look in the description here, http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_17415_Sony-XM-ZZR3301.html , it says 0-70Hz. A lot of mono subwoofer amps have SSF.

In that price range I would buy one of these 2:

The ones you showed me appeal to me more for their size, but the reviews are not very good. Especially compared to the Sony.

Well, it's who designed them that makes the quality. Robert Zeff did the Vibe and Grizz Archer did the PPI. Just google search the model numbers.

I would not trust most peoples reviews of car audio on sites like sonic and others. It all depends on who sets them up and what the user expects from them regardless of facts.
