So you went to the post office and paid for something to be shipped but did not get a receipt for what you paid for? That sounds dumb of you not to ask for one as you PAID for it.
The fact that you think you could've shut down your paypal account would've done anything is funny. It wouldn't have and he'd still get refunded.
The right thing to do would be ship in a resonable time, provide updates to the buyer and treat the scenario as if it was you on the other end waiting to receive a package.
