the main reason it has to be fake is even if they were going to risk this they sure as hell wouldn't put those random firemen guys and other people out there in it's path and put their lives at risk just to do it.

like sure I'd believe that if the tunnel was too long they'd want to have people on hand right there in the tunnel if something went wrong, but that's reaching a point of absurdity where they must have just said "hey, let's do it with cgi so this doesn't turn into the worst idea ever you guys!"
