New Engine options

i would dissassemble the long block, and wipe down the cylinders with a rag and some wd-40. If it's just surface rust it should just come off. If it's not you may have to bring the block to do a slight hone. I know there are ways of using a hand honing tool but i don't know if i would trust that.....

Yeah that seems kind of involved. How hard is that exactly? I seriously doubt i could do that on my own. I have no special tools to reassemble the pistons either. There is some slight roughness to it when you run your finger accross. like fine 2000 grit sandpaper. I hope i didn't waste 300 bucks.

na you didn't waste 300 bucks at all. you got any machine shops around? go check out with them what they can do....

Its not too hard really at all... but i can understand if you don't want to do it. if you were closer i would help you out... you know any car guys in the area to help you assemble/dis-assemble?

Yeah, i called machine shops around here Carquest & Napa to be exact and they said they do not do any dissassemble/assemble. They need a bare block. Yeah i have a real close friend who eats, sleeps, craps VWs all day long. He is real mechanically inclined. Not sure if he had ever done a block dissassembly, if so... VWs Being a mechanic is only a hobby for him/ not his day job. I did call one auto garage and they wouldn't do it either. Maybe i just have to keep calling around. How much would something like that cost, both assembly and dissasembly?

Yeah i would keep calling around, there's gotta be a specialty machine shop that does this. I couldn't imagine it being more than a couple hundred dollars for dis-assemble, hone, reassemble. (at least that's about what i paid for roughly).

I don't know Virginia that well but here's one site i found with a list for your state, if there are any nearby....

Carquest/napa/etc. will not do any of that work, it needs to be an engine specialty shop, let me know if i can help any more.
I went through this prob 4-5 times on my rebuild, trying to find the right shop, so i always want to try to prevent others going through the same shi*.

I called Finishline motorsports and they gave me an estimate at atleast 500-600 dollars. I was then able to call another shop within a 2 hrs drive, and gave me a really good price of $285 for assemble/dissassemble and honing. And it would be another $50 for new piston rings. I think this is my best shot, if im going to do this. He also said Hondas were really good on bearings and doubted they would need to be replaced.

You may want to get new rings, just to be safe, the F23 piston rings are the weakest part of our motors (when turboing).

The Honda bearings are amazing, and shouldn't need to be replaced. Those things are indestructable it seems.

Again if you call a bunch of shops in the area, you can find a good shop that does great work, for a VERY good price, especially since it's easy work in your case.

Hopefully i was able to help, and it turns out the way you want it to, too!

Yeah thanks for your help. I would have never found a link like that for machine shops. Next week i will be dropping it off, and hoping for good things to happen. I was also even thinking of painting the block with high-temp paint too, but i dont have an engine stand that would certainly make it easier. I saw one on craigslist for $50. Have you ever installed and engine to a stand? Guess i need to find bolts that would fit. By the way, if you don't mind me asking, how much money did you put it your bottom end motor. What exactly is custom on it?

Yeah it's not too hard, there's plenty of spots that you can screw the bolts into, that's why an engine stand has the 4 "adjustable" arms to adjust for where the bolts are on the side of the motor. Very easy, just need the correct bolts with the right thread size.

There's nothing really into the bottom end that's custom. I had it sleeved by ERL, pistons, rods, bearings, water pump, oil pump, gastkets, etc. To take a stab at it, prob easily over $2k. It all depends on where you draw the line but to give you an estimate i would say that.

If you got the money and you plan on pushing power through it, now is the time to start upgrading things. But if that's not an option as far as $ and long ways away from power (turbo) then it's not worth it right now.

Just have the block hot tanked if you want a clean block, cause unless you keep constantly cleaning it, or do shows, it'll just get dirty if you paint it, and will only see the paint for so long...
