Go for it! I did this already but then ended up doing a trunk swap and get the 98-99 tailights 
Paint however much you want, it might not be as bright because you paint over the reflectors but you'll still be able to see it, so if it floats your boat then by all means go for it.

yes lets see some pic's ... well i will only be painting the housing in the lower clear portion so i'm not really worried about it being bright since it's only the turn signals and reverse lights
